"A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved; I do not expect the house to fall; but I do expect it will cease to be divided. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction, or its advocates will push it forward till it shall become alike lawful in all the states, old as well as new, North as well as South.

As they weighed their votes ahead of Wednesday, many Republicans in Arizona described agonizing over the decision — reckoning with core beliefs as they texted colleagues, talked to constituents, pastors and priests, and prayed for wisdom. One received what they described as “threats” from a leading state antiabortion advocate. Once Republicans have support for an alternative referendum, the lawmaker said, they probably would proceed to vote together to repeal the 1864 ban and advance the ballot measure.

[72] Our cause, then, must be intrusted to, and conducted by its own undoubted friends – those whose hands are free, whose hearts are in the work – who do care for the result. [59] To meet and overthrow the power of that dynasty, is the work now before all those who would prevent that consummation. [33] First, that no negro slave, imported as such from Africa, and no descendant of such slave can ever be a citizen of any State, in the sense of that term as used in the Constitution of theUnited States.
Why Lincoln’s ‘House Divided’ Speech Was So Important
His reasoning purposefully echoed George Washington’s Farewell Address of 1796, which warned Americans that “the spirit of party” is a prime threat to “Union … a main prop of your liberty.” For Lincoln, Americans’ common identification with the guiding ideal of equality should transcend their affiliations with political parties. The alternative to bitter polarization that Lincoln offered didn’t prevent the Civil War. But it shaped postwar understanding of the territorial, political and even armed conflicts that led to it and the lessons to be learned from it. Sectional tension existed in America from the time of its founding.
The passage of the Fugitive Slave Law in 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854 precipitated a firestorm in Kansas. Mr. Lincoln spoke at the close of the Republican State Convention. On the previous day the Convention had taken the unprecedented move of naming Lincoln their candidate for the Senate [normally Senate candidates were chosen in January when the new legislature convened]. The speech was aimed at Senator Stephen A. Douglas and any Republicans who might think of supporting Douglas. The union must “become all one thing, or all the other” in order to be truly free.

Yet Republicans weren’t too concerned about Lincoln’s race because they thought Senator Douglas, a Democrat, might be open to working with them against expanding slavery. Welcome, or unwelcome, such decision is probably coming, and will soon be upon us, unless the power of the present political dynasty shall be met and overthrown. Such a decision is all that slavery now lacks of being alike lawful in all the States. Four days later, commenced the struggle, which ended in repealing that congressional prohibition. [64] A leading Douglas Democratic newspaper thinks Douglas’ superior talent will be needed to resist the revival of the African slave trade.

But Americans can apply the logic of his argument to contemporary inequities based on race, employment, gender, voting rights, criminal justice, religion and more. The nation is a house divided, many times over, in all of those cases. Mr. Buchanan was elected, and the indorsement, such as it was, secured. The outgoing President, in his last annual message, as impressively as possible echoed back upon the people the weight and authority of the indorsement. The Presidential inauguration came, and still no decision of the court; but the incoming President in his inaugural address, fervently exhorted the people to abide by the forthcoming decision, whatever it might be.

Under theoperation of that policy, that agitation has not only not ceased, buthas constantly augmented. In my opinion it will not cease until a crisisshall have been reached and passed.
Wise counsels may accelerate or mistakes delay it, but sooner or later, the victory is sure to come. (1) That no negro slave, imported as such from Africa, and no descendant of such slave, can ever be a citizen of any State, in the sense of that term as used in the Constitution of the United States. This point is made in order to deprive the negro in every possible event of the benefit of that provision of the United States Constitution which declares that "the citizens of each State shall be entitled to all the privileges and immunities of citizens in the several States." Lincoln’s now-famous “house divided” line, which is drawn from the Bible, was actually part of a campaign speech he delivered at the 1858 Illinois Republican State Convention. Lincoln, then a relatively unknown politician, had just won the nomination to run for U.S. Senate against one of the most important politicians in the country, Stephen A. Douglas.

Some Republicans maintain that a vote to repeal the 1864 law would not be at odds with their antiabortion beliefs because they are trying to be strategic about choosing a path forward that would prevent the most abortions. Some Republican resistance to the state Supreme Court ruling emerged almost immediately.
Soon after the court made its decision on April 9, several GOP lawmakers issued statements condemning the move, including Gress, Bolick and state Sen. T.J. Shope — who all hail from districts that could be competitive in November. Several GOP lawmakers and operatives said Trump’s comments could ease the decision to vote for a repeal for some Republicans who were on the fence, granting them permission to go against their values for a better chance at securing victory in November. A Republican lawmaker familiar with internal discussions said many in the caucus are inclined to delay the vote a week, until they can draft their own version of an abortion referendum to put on the ballot in November. The Arizona lawmakers did not get a chance to vote on whether to repeal the law Wednesday, as Republican leaders succeeded in blocking a vote on the House floor while their party scrambles to come up with a plan to deal with the issue.
People familiar with ongoing conversations among legislators said the GOP is weighing its options. He asked Americans to choose the common purpose that would best serve their Union – a government of all free or all slave states – before the crisis chose for them.

Green, who graduated in 2014, called the effort part of a “common thread of protest and activism in the Morehouse tradition” of social and political engagement. By 1850, the extension of slavery into the new territories won through the Mexican-American War of 1846–1848 provided a testing ground for competing visions of America.
